The Sierra de Grazalema is well known for its breathtaking hikes. El Torréon, the highest peak in the province of Cadiz, as well as the impressive Garganta Verde canyon are within view of the Finca.
Storm summits and explore gorges
The climb to summit El Torréon is tough. Some of the steeper and rockier sections call for an “all-fours” approach to reach the 1654m peak in about two hours. But the reward is absolutely worth it! The view from the summit is really unique: in one direction you can see to Ronda and the famous Puente Nuevo. In the other, you can see to the shimmering Atlantic Ocean on the horizon. On clear days, the view extends to North Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar or the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada.
But you also have the opportunity to discover the depths of the Garganta Verde, essentially hiking into history itself. The first section descends steeply into the gorge where you will find yourself up close and personal with the largest griffon vulture colony in Europe.
The gorge was carved out by the Bocaleones stream, bit by bit over centuries. To this day the Bocaleones still flows through the Gargante Verde and later onto our property at Finca Vegana. Once at the bottom the gorge opens up into a kind of cave with impressive rock formations to admire. The steep descent then calls for a steep ascent. Full of wonder and amazement, you have to turn on your heels and make the steep climb out, while the vultures soar easily above your head.
Do you prefer something a little more relaxed?
In that case we recommend the hike along the Río Majaceite in El Bosque. It is about 10 km there and back, always following the river to Benamahoma.
The distance may sound a challenge for some but the altitude difference is minimal. Along the way you will surely be taking many breaks anyway, in order to take in the wonderful nature and the many waterfalls. In Summer, don’t forget your bathers so you can cool off in the crystal clear river.
Another option is to hike to Zahara de la Sierra, the picturesque mountain village, leaving directly from the Finca. You will reach the main square in about an hour. Once there you can visit a bar or restaurant, or continue up to the castle. A 360 degree view that is definitely worth the trek!
Whether long or short, strenuous or moderate – the Sierra de Grazalema and its surroundings offer hiking for everyone. So, lace up your boots and get out there!
